In January there is the annual presentation by the Museum itself discussing its achievements and ambitions and December sees the Christmas get-together. In the months between the Friends enjoy a varied programme of talks with the schedule of forthcoming speakers listed below. Meetings are held at North Road station (the Museum) in the Conference Room on the first Thursday of the month starting at 7:15pm. This can vary, the first Thursday of January 2009 was New Year's Day for example and there is an afternoon meeting in September, but the schedule is worked out well in advance and, if that schedule is changed, every effort will be made to keep people informed. Non-members are always welcome to the talks but we do ask for a donation.
If you would like to suggest a speaker for one of our meetings, or if you speak on railway related subjects yourself and are interested in offering your services, our Programme Organizer Brian Denham would be pleased to hear from you by e-mail.
Details of events organized by the Museum itself can be found on the "What's On" page of the Museum's website here. This page includes a link to a downloadable leaflet which lists all events at the Museum including the Friends meetings. These events can involve the Friends and include, for example, Santa weekends and Heritage Day tours.
| Thursday 2 September | The Volk Electric Railway, Mr. Vic Branfoot. Note that his is a late change. David Elliot of the A1 Steam Trust, who was to have spoken about Tornado, discovered that he was double-booked. Vic Branfoot has stepped in at short notice to talk about this unusual narrow-gauge system in Brighton. | |
| Thursday 23 September at 2.15pm | Green for Danger Mr. Roy State | |
| Thursday 7 October | An Ordinary Hobby- No Ordinary Life Mr. Gerald Rivett | |
| Thursday 4 November | Railways- from 1825 to the Battle for the Tees Mr. Charles McNab | |
| Thursday 2 December | Christmas Get-together |
The Guided Tours are not aimed at Friends of the Museum but, since they are actually conducted by members of the Friends, it makes sense to list them here.
The tours cover North Road Station's environs as well as the Museum itself and make an excellent introduction to the Museum and to the Friends. Tours begin at 2:00pm and no booking is required so, if you would like to join a tour, please just be at the Museum in good time.
*The tour itself is free- Museum admission still applies. Contact the Museum for details of admission including concessions and family tickets or visit their website from here.
